Facebook – Why it works for some businesses and not others

Over the last few years we have been doing lots of consulting with smaller businesses about their Facebook business pages. Every single time we ask them what the goal is, the answer is the same – get as many likes (fans) as we can.
So ok – this is a fair enough strategy, however the energy it takes to continually generate new fans is exhausting for a small business as they don’t have the massive dollars the larger companies have. The other side to this is that recent studies have shown that only 1% of Facebook Fans actually engage (or communicate with) your brand. Great! – You’ve now used your marketing budget to attract as many fans as you can afford and only 1% will communicate! It just doesn’t feel like a solid strategy.
Taking a backward step here and looking at social media, we need to remember why it is so popular. This is a way for people to connect with each other. It’s massive because your voice as an individual can reach places you can’t in your smaller circle of friends. It also ads credibility, status (being the first to discover something cool), it’s a way to stay in touch and retouch with old friends. See the pattern? – It’s all about ME ME ME and this is perfectly normal human behaviour. Read more…

Back in the day when WWW was all the rage (1998 – 2004) and everyone was talking about having a web page, the entire industry was hit all of a sudden by a huge amount of “website builder architect designer” people. We would love to help you add some simple social media connections to the home page of your website to help you share your content and increase your social traffic. It’s a very simple process for us to manage on your behalf.
The following is an example of the social links. We will be providing you with the “+ share ” button. THEN, when you’re ready to create and connect to your twitter, facebook, foursquare, linked in or any other social media accounts (as shown in the example)- we can help you with this as well.
As a visitor to your site, if for any reason I want to share this information with family or friends on facebook for example, I simply select the “+ share” icon which opens a window of social links. I would normally choose facebook to publish to my facebook profile. See an example of what happens next, below.
Automatically, information about your business is posted to my profile. I can add a comment and then by selecting “share” all of my friends on “facebook” can now see what I have posted and if they like this, they can share it with their friends as well. Keep in mind that if I have 300 friends and my friends all have 300 friends…..all of a sudden one referral from this very tiny “+ share” button, can reach potentially hundreds if not thousands of people.
